Like so many Caribbean ports, it is that open air market that once defined these colonial communities and it is great to see Falmouth has not destroyed the history that made it great. Still it has both the geographic and design of the town and it is great for pictures. There is no doubt the recent, enclosed and reproduction market has taken some of the commercial luster from this site. However, I did stop to take some pictures because the architectural prominence is significant and the commercial center on the square. As the earlier, reviewer says this is really a market place for locals. I visited once by myself and once with my wife. However, after politely declining and walking that block, the town opens to a great Caribbean colonial community and one of the first things you see is a palm lined pedestrian street with this market. Yes you will have to walk one block from the port terminal to the block with the market and square where you will be aggressively approached by many people wanting to guide you or sell you marijuana. If you are in port, take time to walk beyond the sanitized, Disneyfied port and get into the real Falmouth. You don't travel to a different region to see another USA you go to see something different. Pickup and drop-off at hotels in Falmouth provided. See the south coast of Jamaica as you travel to the estate, then take a 45-minute tour, learn about the production of rum, and finish by sampling 10 different rums. Where some see unfamiliar and potential hazard, I see a quaint, historical English colonial grid Caribbean community. When visiting Falmouth, take a full-day tour to the Appleton Estate for a guided tour and rum tasting. We recently went to Falmouth on an NCL cruise and I fell in love with Jamaica here. ![]()
